Beyoncé, who has been virtually untouchable as a performer and black icon, is drawing widespread scorn for allowing her face to be darkened for a Paris fashion shoot, honoring Nigerian musician and human rights activist Fela Kuti.

The controversy is all the more bizarre given past allegations that Beyoncé is actually lightening her skin.
As a personal anecdote, I once interviewed the guy who served as the vocal coach to the original cast of Destiny’s Child (of whom only Kelly and Beyoncé ultimately survived.) He told me that another member of the group, who was actually lighter complexioned than Beyoncé (and her best friend at the time) was made by Matthew Knowles, the group’s manager, to lay out and tan herself, so that Beyoncé would always be the “fairest of them all.”
Take that for what you will.
